How to Install a Video Intercom System in Your Home
If you want to increase the safety and security of your home, installing a video intercom system is a good idea. A video intercom security system allows you to establish the identity of people outside before giving them access into your home. The system makes it possible for you to see and converse with visitors while they are on the other side of the door. All these features make this security system very beneficial for homeowners. Follow these simple steps to install a video intercom system in your home.
Things You'll Need
-
Video intercom system
-
Drill
-
Screws
-
Cable and extra components
Step 1: Check the Master Station
The main component of every video intercom system is its master station. This unit contains the circuitry required for electronic communication. Measure the size of the video intercom system’s master station. Once you know the size of this unit, you can find a suitable space to fix it. Mounting the master station on the wall is the best option.
Step 2: Mount the Camera
Once you have mounted the master station in an appropriate place, the next thing you have to do is to fix the camera of your video intercom system. This unit will have to be mounted outside the home so that you can your see visitors properly. Choose a suitable location for your camera. Ensure that the camera gets a good view of the door and perhaps even a part of the surrounding area. If the unit has flanges or brackets, measure the holes in the brackets and drill into them. When this is done, use suitable screws to fix the unit on the wall.
Step 3: Fix the Wiring
Before you start connecting the wires, ensure that the power circuit you are working with is cut. Unless you have a wireless video intercom system, you will have to drill a hole in the wall to pass the camera wire through. Once this is done, connect the camera wire to the monitor. Ensure that the wires for the lock release are connected. Different video intercom systems have different connections. So it is best to check the wire connections in the manual before turning the system on.
Step 4: Test the System
Double check all the wiring and connections before testing the system. Ensure that each substation of the video intercom system is connected to the master station. Restore the power to the circuit and check your video intercom system. Have someone stand outside and check the picture from the camera. Ensure that the audio system is working properly. If the connections are made correctly, the system should work fine.
Once you are convinced that the entire video intercom system is working perfectly, seal up any gaps where wiring is passing through the wall. This can be done by applying trim molding around the edges of the gaps.
