How to Install a Wireless Gigabit Router
what you'll need
- A Wireless Gigabit Router
- DSL or Cable Modem
- CAT5 Ethernet Cable
- Computer
A wireless gigabit router is a wireless router which has an Ethernet port allowing up to one gigabit of data transfer for faster speeds. The speeds can send and receive files and play games up to one thousand megabytes per second. Devices using this speed of transfer must be physically connected to the wireless gigabit router via a CAT5 Ethernet cable. To install a wireless gigabit router you must have the essential components and a computer with internet capability.
Step 1 – Set Up
Remove the wireless gigabit router from the box and take off any packaging. Set the wireless gigabit router somewhere safe, near the modem and computer. Detach the Ethernet cable from the computer and plug it into the LAN port on the wireless router to create a connection between it and the modem.
Step 2 – Attaching the Cables
Attach the power supply for the wireless gigabit router into jack socket. The other end should be plugged into the power outlet. Note that the lights on the router will light up and flash until they have initialized themselves. The other CAT5 Ethernet cable should be attached to the computer and the first numbered port on the wireless gigabit router.
Step 3 –Wireless Gigabit Router Address
Depending on the physical address of your particular router make, you will need to type 192.168.X.X into the address bar of your Internet browser window. The “X” are numbers determined by your specific maker and you will note the address in the instructions for setting up the wireless gigabit router. D-Link, for example, uses 192.168.0.1, others will be variants.
Step 4 – Configuration Software
Once you have typed the address into the Internet browser window, remember that you are not actually “online” at this time. Your browser window is simply accessing the configuration software for the wireless gigabit router and not surfing the net. You will note that you may be asked for a username and password. Most user names are default names which you will find in the instructions. The password is usually blank and you simply hit the “Enter” key to enter the configuration software.
Step 5 - Configuring the Wireless Gigabit Router
You will need to set the parameters for the wireless gigabit router to communicate with your modem and PC. You can initiate the “Wizard” to set up the main configuration but you may also need to obtain your IP address from your Internet Service Provider. Most wireless routers use a method to automatically obtain an IP address from the source of the Internet supply but in some cases it is necessary to use a static IP address, Gateway subnet mask and DNS code. Input them into the appropriate boxes within the software.
Step 6 – Checking your Internet Connection
Open a new tab on your Internet browser and type in your home page. If the page loads correctly you are ready to go. If you receive an error message follow any on screen instructions to fix the issue.
