How To Install An Electrical Outlet Outdoors

by DoItYourself Staff

Having an electrical outlet available on your patio or deck is a safer alternative than running extension cords through the house or garage and all over the yard. Outdoor outlets are a great convenience on a deck, near a pool or on the side of your home. You can plug in a radio, pool pump, lights and electric lawn equipment without having to negotiate long cords. Installing an outdoor electrical outlet is an easy do-it-yourself project that will increase the usability of your outdoor spaces.

Locate Area for Outlet

Take some time to determine the best location to place the electrical outlet. Choose a place on the actual sill of the house as this will make wiring the box much easier. If it is too low, or too high, you can run metal conduit to the box also.

Cut Hole

Once you know where the electrical outlet is going to be, shut off the electricity to your house. With a jigsaw or a reciprocal saw cut out the hole for the box. You can also mount the electrical box to the outside of your home if it would be easier.

Connect Wires

Once you have the box installed, run your wire to it. Make the connections with the electrical outlet and secure to the box. Put on the faceplate, making sure there is a weatherproof gasket, and screw to the outlet.
