Most people only consider a motion sensor light when they are considering improving their outside security. It is correct that the motion sensor light make a perfect addition to external warning systems, but they are also a great way of saving money in the home, too. The motion light is activation when the detector notices movement, so using one in your basement or garage, or in an area that particularly needs lighting during the day, would mean that the light will only turn on when a person is actually in the vicinity. This can prevent lights being left on all day. If you wish to install a motion sensor light in your home, this can be done easily enough by anyone with a little bit of home improvement experience. Follow a few simple instructions to help you get the job done quickly and effortlessly.

Step 1 - Preparation

Before you do anything else, turn off the electricity at the mains supply, and ensure that it remains turned off while you are trying to complete this task. You may choose to use a piece of masking tape over the circuit breaker switch while you are working, as this will prevent it from being turned back on accidentally. You should then remove any ceiling fixtures by unscrewing them, and removing the wires from the back. Leave the wires in place, as these can be used to install the motion detector light when the time comes. Remove the light switch from the wall as well, leaving those wires in place also.

Step 2 - Wire up the Light

Then you will need to wire the light into position. You should probably stand on a ladder if you are struggling to reach. Fit the motion sensor light into the wall. If the hole in the wall made by the ordinary light is too large to support your motion detector part, then you will need to cover the gap with a layer of backerboard before you continue. Take the wire from the wall, and cut away any damaged pieces of wire, and strip off enough insulation so that you have a good connection piece, using either wire strippers or cutters, or even a pair of pliers if you have nothing else. Insert the wires into the back of the light, and then screw the light firmly into the wall or backerboard.

Step 3 - Wire up the Sensor

You will now need to wire in the sensor. There should be enough space around the gap for you to install this without backerboard, but if you are using the sensor in a communal area, you might want to add backerboard to prevent people from sticking their fingers in and touching the wire. Wire up the sensor in the same way as you did the light, and then screw it to the wall. You should then caulk around the backerboard or wall edges which are exposed, and leave this to dry. When the caulk is fully dry, then you can turn the motion sensor to "On", and use the light.
