How to Install an Outdoor Wireless Remote Light Switch

by DoItYourself Staff

Having an outdoor wireless remote light switch is beneficial in many ways. It is especially useful if your current outdoor light switch is in a undesirable location.

Purchase the Wireless Switch

You can get a outdoor wireless remote light switch at your local hardware store. These switches are going to differ from the indoor wireless switches in that they are more durable and the way to attach it to a surface will be designed for a rougher surface.

Place the Socket

Your new wireless switch will come with both a socket and a switch. Unscrew the light bulb from the outdoor fixture, screw in the socket, then screw the bulb back into the socket. This socket communicates with the wireless switch.

Find a Place for Your Switch

The outdoor switch will look like a regular light switch, except that it is slightly bulkier and has no wiring. Depending on the package, the switch can be attached to a surface. If it is a strong adhesive, be careful where you place it, because it will either be difficult or impossible to move it without causing damage to the outside of your home. Commonly, the switch will come with places to screw in screws so just use a drill and attach it to the outside of your home.
