How to Install an Under the Sink Reverse Osmosis Water Filter

Installing an under sink reverse osmosis water filter is the most effective way to produce drinking water that is free of any impurities. Reverse osmosis is the system of choice for most people who are concerned with water quality. Traditionally, this water filter is installed above the counter by the sink. However, you can install a bigger unit under the sink that is out of sight and produces a larger amount of water everyday. Here are the basics of how to install and under the sink reverse osmosis water filter.

Step 1 - Choosing the Proper System

Before you get started installing anything, to make sure that you have the right system for the job. Use your tape measure to get the dimensions of the area under the sink. When shopping for a reverse osmosis water filter system comic sure that you have the dimensions and that they match up with the space that you have. You should also make sure that you get a system that has attained big enough to provide the water needed for you and your family. If you can find a system that holds four or five gallons at a time, this would be ideal for most families.

Step 2 - Install Cartridge

The first thing that you need to do is install the reverse osmosis membrane cartridge into the filter housing. The cartridge for this process is generally sealed inside a plastic bag that has disinfectant liquid surrounding it. This is done so that bacteria cannot get into the filter and continue to grow. You need to put on plastic gloves when preparing to handle the filter so that you do not get anything in it. Open the bag and then remove the filter. Put it in the filter housing and then put the cap on. 

Step 3 - Install the Filter Housing

You will need to hang the filter housing up on the inside of the cabinet under the sink. Hold the bracket for the filter up against the cabinet wall and then use an electric drill to drill in the screws that are provided. This will allow you to hang the filter on the side wall of the cabinet.

Step 4 - Put the Tank In

You now need to put the tank in the cabinet. Take the fitting that goes into the tank and put Teflon tape around the male end. Then put the fitting into the tank and tighten it with a wrench.

Step 5 - Drill the Holes

You will need to drill a hole in the drain line that runs out of the sink. You may also need to drill up into the sink to provide an opening for the faucet.

Step 6 - Hook up the Lines

You now need to hook up the necessary lines. Hook up a water line going into the filter. Another tube will go between the filter and the tank. You will need a tube going from the filter into the drain line as well. Then hook up the faucet and run a tube from it to the tank.
