How to Install Carpet Padding on Concrete

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Large bucket
  • Liquid bleach
  • Detergent
  • Water
  • Mops
  • Vacuum
  • Broom
  • Mops
  • Floor Fans
  • Concrete floor sealer

While you install carpet and pad on wood floors, concrete floors require special treatment before you lay your carpet padding. This can help prevent the formation of mildew from moisture that collects on the concrete surface. If you plan to install carpet and padding on your concrete basement floor, follow the 4 steps below.

Step 1 – Clean and Rinse your Floor

Remove all debris from the floor. Sweep it with a bristle broom, and then vacuum and mop the floor with a solution of detergent and water. When finished, thoroughly rinse the floor with clean water. Allow the floor to completely dry.

Step 2 – Seal the Floor

Apply a commercial sealer with a roller and allow it to dry.

Step 3 – Install Carpet Grippers

Place carpet gripper strip parallel with the wall and leave a ½-inch space between the strip and the wall. Secure the strips with epoxy adhesive.

Step 4 – Lay Out the Padding

Lay the padding on the floor, pull it up to the grippers and staple it to the gripper strip.
