How to Install Copper Wiring

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Screwdriver
  • Copper Wiring
  • Brackets
  • Screws

Install copper wiring into your home to ensure that your electrical equipment is more protected against fire hazard and electrical short-circuiting. Putting in a few electrical wires can be accomplished by anyone with basic home improvement skills. So long as you ensure that all of your electrical currents are being carried efficiently once you have finished, you can install copper wiring into your own home. If you are a DIY beginner, then you should follow a few simple rules to finish the job quickly and easily.

Step 1 - Putting in the Ground Wire

Before you begin to install your copper wire, you will need to put in a copper ground wire. This should be placed in the soil behind your house, much as you would drive a stake into the ground when installing fences. These ground stakes should be put into the soil close to the house, and copper wire connected to the top of the ground wire. The extended wires should be as direct as possible and preferably short, in order to ensure that most of the electrical current is carried into the home. These ground wires should then be taken directly into the home using a star configuration, with each of the branches grounding a different room in the home.

Step 2 - Adding Your Copper Wire

Before you proceed any further, you should turn off your electricity at the mains. Now that the copper ground wire is there, you should add wires which are connected to the main electrical box. This will be located where you or a visitor normally reads the meter. Locate the fuses for each switch, and then connect the copper wires for each room. You should then take the wire up into the ceiling, and through the sub floor of the rooms above. The wires can then be fed down into the lower rooms, or up to the 1st floor rooms, depending upon how you wish to install your copper wire. You can follow the trail of aluminum wire through the walls and floors. These wires will connect to lights and electric sockets.

Step 3 - Take the Wire to the Connections

When the wire is now linked into the rooms, you should draw it into the rooms. Use brackets to connect the wire to the wall in order to prevent it from dragging on to the floor. Unscrew the plugs, and lay them on the floor with the wires hanging down. Remove the wires from the back of the plug, and place the copper wires in their place. Your wiring system should then be linked to the grounding wires as they enter the room. These wires will ensure that any spare electrical charge will travel down to the copper stake, rather than into the electrical box.

When you have connected copper wire to all of the plugs and lights, you should return to the electrical mains, and turn the electricity back on. Check that your lights are functioning before you proceed any further.
