How to Install Telephone Cable

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • cable
  • telephone jack
  • drill
  • screwdriver
  • wire stripper

Telephone cable needs to be installed properly in order to ensure proper connection of your phone to the network. The cable is used to connect your home telephone to the central telephone junction box outside your house or apartment. Installation of the cable is relatively an easy task. All you need to do is follow the steps described below.

The telephone cable you need for this purpose may be bought at any electronic shop. Many categories of these cables are available. Choose telephone cables that belong to category 2 and 3 since their compatibility with DSL modems and multi-line telephone equipment will be ensured.

Step 1 – Take Appropriate Precautions

Make sure all the cables from the phone to the telephone jacks are concealed or securely put away. If the cables are left lying on the floor, there are chances that someone might trip and fall. Also, do not place the telephones next to the high voltage wiring. This may cause interference in the line.

Step 2 – Select Location

It is important to know where the telephone system is going to be installed. Take a look around your home and see where it would be feasible enough to place the telephone. It should be placed in a non-humid, will-lit area where there is little or no dust.  The location is given a consideration while cabling. A telephone jack should be placed in every room, except washroom and kitchen so the telephone may be moved from one place to another without a hassle of décor being tampered with. These telephone jacks must be placed with appropriate distance from the floor.

Step 3 – Know Which Topology to Apply

Two topologies are used in cable installation. These include the star topology and the daisy topology. In the star topology the phone is directly connected to the phone outlet which in turn is connected to the phone network box. Whereas in daisy topology, the phone is connected with the other phone and so on. These phones are eventually connected to the phone company lines. One phone is usually labeled as the main phone in such a topology.

Step 4 – Plugging the Cable

Start with plugging the customized telephone cable. Plug one end into the telephone and the other in the phone jack.

Step 5 – Plug the Power Source and Power Cable

The power source of the phone is usually present at its base. Ensure appropriate power connections. Cordless telephones will definitely require a dedicated power connection, which will be provided to the base station. This power is usually supplied by AC adapters. Now plug the power cable. One end of the power cable should be plugged in the wall outlet and the other in the telephones base.

Step 6 – Test the Connection

When the connections are complete, you should pick up the phone and be able to hear a steady tone indicating that you are connected to the telephone network. You can dial a friend’s number to ensure that you are able to dial out properly. Once this is done, you can store away your tools.
