How to Install Vinyl Deck Covering

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Vinyl deck covering (planks and edging)
  • Fascia boards
  • Broom
  • Pressure washer or scrub brush and deck cleaner
  • Sandpaper
  • Measuring tape
  • Galvanized screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Rubber mallet
  • Silicone caulk and caulk gun
  • Utility knife or handsaw

A vinyl deck covering is used to cover up and old deck that is still stable but looks old or damaged. It’s a less expensive way to update the look of your deck, without replacing the entire structure. Vinyl is a very durable material that will last a long time if the vinyl deck covering is properly installed. It does not rot or rust and it requires minimal maintenance.

Step 1: Clean Existing Deck

It’s important that you clean your deck before attaching the vinyl deck covering. You should sweep away any dirt and dust and then use a scrub brush and deck cleaner to make sure the surface is completely clean. Allow the deck to dry completely before installing the vinyl deck cover. You need to be careful if you’re using a pressure washer, because it can ruin the deck’s surface if it is too powerful.

Use sandpaper to sand down any areas that could ruin the vinyl after it is laid. If parts and pieces of the deck are ruined or rotting, you may want to replace the planks before you add the vinyl deck covering. Remove any nails or fasteners that stick out of the deck if you think they could damage the vinyl covering. Measure your deck to know how much material you’ll need to cover the entire area of the deck when you go to your hardware store.

Step 2: Attach the Edging

You need to measure the edges of your deck. Measure both the corners and the edge of the deck that meets your home. Use galvanized screws to attach the edging. You’ll need two different types of edging, straight edging and edging for the corners of the perimeter of the deck.

Step 3: Install the Planks

For the vinyl deck cover to work to its fullest potential, you should attach the vinyl deck planks to the existing deck by placing them perpendicularly. Measure the vinyl planks carefully before installing them. Slide the vinyl deck planks under the edging and secure the planks with galvanized screws. Use a rubber mallet to pound vinyl nail covers into the nail holes.

Step 4: Install Fascia Board

Fascia board is used to seal the perimeter of the vinyl deck covering. Seal the fascia board and edging with silicone caulk. Install a fascia board plank so that it matches up with the bottom of the fascia. Just like before, use galvanized nails and vinyl cover strips to cover the nail heads. Use silicone caulk to seal the ends and any corner pieces you add.
