How to Install Wire Closet Shelving

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Screwdriver
  • Wire closet shelving kit
  • Tape measure
  • Screws

If you need to add more space to your room, then you should consider installing wire closet shelving. This is a simple type of shelving which looks good, but can also be easily fitted in a day or so. Wire closet shelving makes great storage-saving space for children's rooms, or even for closets which just need a little more shoe room.

Step 1 - Fitting the Support Rails

Begin by installing the support rails. These are 2 long, thin poles of metal which will hold up the shelving. You can install these directly onto the wall simply by screwing them into position. Make sure that they are level by carefully measuring and marking their position, and by screwing them to the studs directly into the wall.

Step 2 - Add the Brackets

Once this has been done, you can then add any horizontal brackets that will support the shelves. You should screw these into the stud supports again, to give them better security. You can then add the length-ways brackets which support the shelves.

Step 3 - Add the Shelves

You can then add the shelving. Take the first shelf, and lay it on top of the length-ways brackets. Screw it into place. Repeat for the rest of your shelves.
