How to Install Your Switch Assembly
what you'll need
- Ignition Switch Assembly
- Screw Drivers
Installing a switch assembly will depend on where the switch assembly is to be installed. There are several switch assembly designs for different types of switch applications. In the article below, installing an ignition switch assembly for a car will be discussed, although it will also tackle a bit about other switch assemblies. When a car fails to start and the alternator and the starter are in good condition, chances are, the ignition switch assembly is the culprit. Here is how to install a new one to solve the problem.
Step 1 – Preparation
Make sure to disconnect the negative cable on the battery’s negative terminal first and remove the lower and upper steering column cover as well. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screws and unclip them.
Step 2 – Detach the Steering Wheel
Lift the center cover to detach the steering wheel. Remove the horn wire as well and the washer and retaining nut. Remove the steering wheel and remove the shaft.
Step 3 –Disconnect Other Wiring
Disconnect the wiring from the windshield wiper and the signal switches. If there is an old ignition switch assembly installed, unscrew it and remove it from the car. Simply pull the switch assembly, disconnect the wiring and pull it out.
Step 4 - Lock the Ignition Switch
Place the car key into the ignition and lock the switch into position. Use a small screwdriver to press the retaining pin and turn the key off to let the cylinder go free. When the cylinder is already free, turn the key again to the lock position and remove the cylinder and the key.
Step 5 – Install the Ignition Switch Assembly
Get the key cylinder and install it into the brand new switch assembly. An ignition switch assembly can be bough at any auto supply shop. These devices are already assembled so all that is needed is to attach them to the ignition cylinder. Line up the contacts in both the assembly line and the cylinder. Make sure that the switch assembly is perfectly in line with the cylinder before placing it back to the steering column. When the new assembly is in place, reverse the steps above.
Installation of Other Types of Switch Assemblies
Switch assemblies can also be installed in parking lights, emergency kill switch, mirror mount, break lever, horn switch, signal light switches, and other switches. The assembly only needs to be inserted on the right spot on the switches to work. The installation is not a very hard task to perform. For example, if the switch assembly comes as a part of a parking light installation, the switch assembly only needs to be connected to the right section of the switch and that’s it. However, it is important to refer to the manufacture’s installation manual to check where to install the assembly properly. Since the assembly is already pre-assembled, it only needs to be fitted onto the switch.
