How to Keep Mice out of a BBQ Grill

by DoItYourself Staff

If you do not properly maintain your BBQ grill, you could run the risk of creating an environment in which vermin like to live. You should be sure to clean and take care of your grill to keep it suitable for you and your family to use in preparation of your food.

Clean Out Your Grill

Make sure there are no twigs, leaves, burnt charcoal or anything in general inside your barbeque grill. Mice and other vermin enjoy living in places that have a lot of clutter, because it is easier for them to make nests and keep hidden. By ridding your grill of any clutter, even in the off-season, you will reduce the chances of any living creature finding your grill to be a potential place to live.

Each time you are finished cooking, clean out the grill with a grill brush while it is still a little warm. If any food had fallen, it will be easier to clean off while it is still fresh, and there will be no scent to attract the mice. Make sure that your grill is completely wiped out with a wet cloth and that there are no crumbs on the ground around the grill. Mice are attracted to food.

Cover Your Grill

If mice cannot physically get into your grill, you won’t have a problem. Look into purchasing a cover that will wrap around the bulk of your barbeque grill. Finding a cover with straps will work the best as you can make sure any gaps and holes are completely covered up.

You can also consider making custom hole covers for your grill, and plug up the holes after each use. Covering the holes will protect your grill from invasion.

Store your grill in a shed or your garage if possible. Though mice can still get into in your garage, it is less likely that they will show up.

Natural Repellent

Place out natural vermin repellent and poisons around the grill. Natural repellent will ward off mice and rats and they will find another location to live. Do not put any repellent inside of your grill, however, as the repellent may also be harmful to humans if consumed.

If you do have a repellent that is completely natural and not harmful to humans, place some in potpourri bags and store them in the grill to make sure that mice don’t come, but as stated, you should use caution to make sure they will not harm you or your family.

Mouse Traps

As with the repellents and poisons, you can place mousetraps around the grill to protect your grill. Do not place mousetraps inside your barbeque grill, however as if a mouse did die in it, it could rot and cause severe damage to your grill before you are able to notice. If you do use poisons or traps, check them everyday to protect you and your family from disease.
