How to Lengthen a Dishwasher Drain Hose

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Double threaded (male/male) hose adapter
  • Length of hose (in equal diameter to your current hose)
  • Universal clips
  • Screw driver
  • Towels or cloths
  • Teflon tape

If you have moved your dishwasher or sink during a kitchen remodel, you might need to lengthen the dishwasher drain hose. Before you start, you would be advised to check with the manufacturer of your dishwasher to see if they sell extended hoses especially for your machine. If not, you can lengthen it yourself by purchasing a few items.

Step 1 – Water Supply

Switch off the isolator valve which goes to your dishwasher. Lay towels or thick cloths down to catch any excess water.

Step 2 – Hose Removal

Your hose will probably attach to the dishwasher using a plastic screw threaded nut clamp. The other end may well just be slipped into an outlet pipe, which you can just pull out.

Step 3 - Lengthening

Take the end of the hose from the pipe and wipe it dry. Make sure there is no dampness in or around the edge. Take the double threaded adapter and secure it into the end of the hose. Grab the new piece of hose and cut it to length, so that you have plenty for the drainage outlet pipe as well as enough to reach the adapter. Push the adapter into the hose and secure it. Use Teflon tape on both parts of the adapter to make sure there are no leaks. If needed, you can secure it further using universal round clamps, which will screw down tightly to the hose.
