How to Level Patio Paving Stones

Patio paving stones are a simple landscaping installation project. It is important to prepare the area, excavate and level the area.

Step 1 – Finding the Location

Decide on the area in your yard where you would like to install the patio stones. Use spray chalk to draw out the area on the grass.

Step 2 – Excavating the Area

Use a shovel to the excavate the dirt from the area within the spray chalk lines. The depth of the excavation should be equal throughout the entire space. The depth should allow for the pavers, the sand and the base. Remove all of the rocks and roots from the area. Compact the dirt with a tamper which can be rented from most local hardware stores and rental shops. 

Step 3 – Leveling the Base

Remove all of the rocks and roots in the area. Compact the dirt with a tamper which can be rented from most local hardware stores and rental shops. Use the level tool to check the level of the soil. Readjust the the dirt as necessary. Spread the gravel on the dirt throughout the excavated area. Tamp the gravel with the tamper. Check the level of the base with the leveling tool. Place the tool on the base and check to see if the bubble is in the center. Continue checking the level of the entire base area. Use your garden house to wet the gravel. Be sure the area drains properly. Allow the area to dry completely.

Step 4 – Leveling the Paving Stones

Place the patio paving stones on top of the packed gravel. Start at one side. Continue laying the paving stones across to the other side of the area. Continue until the entire area has been covered. Check the level of the patio. Use the sand to adjust the level of any of the paving stones that need to be raised.
