How to Load a Dishwasher Rack

by DoItYourself Staff

Whether your dishwasher is built-in or portable, newer or older, you can load your dishwasher racks to maximize cleaning and energy efficiency.

Put Things in the Right Places and in the Right Way

Most dishwashers have narrow, slotted areas for plates and pot lids, wider slotted areas for bowls, a silverware holder and a top rack for cups and glasses. There may also be special baskets for particular items. Face plates in the same direction and wash silverware and cutlery food side up. Arrange glasses and cups upside down on the top rack. Larger cooking utensils can be threaded among cups and glasses on the top rack or in special baskets. If you are washing pots or other large items, place them upside down.

Maximize Cleaning and Energy Efficiency

Make sure the dishwasher is full before running it to maximize energy efficiency. But don't overload it by stacking dishes too close together or too high. Dishes need enough room in between so that hot water and detergent can do their best cleaning and that the moveable arms inside can move freely. Make sure that what you are loading is dishwasher safe.

Follow Manufacturer's Directions

Follow the manufacturer's directions regarding type of detergent, rinsing agents, where to put things and any other special instructions for your particular model. After a period of use, you will get to know the unique qualities of your dishwasher, and you can use it to its best potential.
