How to Maintain a Stainless Steel Grill with Porcelein Grates
During barbeque season, it is important to maintain your stainless steel grill. Whether you have metal grates or porcelain grates, you must keep those clean as well, to prevent the spread of bacteria and disease.
Cleaning out the Grill
The first thing you need to do with any sort of maintenance is remove any dried food, ashes or refuge that may be in your grill. After all the bulk is removed, heat up your grill and then scrub off any remaining leftover food residue with a soft brush. If you have difficult food or watermarks, you can use a little cooking oil to help remove it. After you are done cleaning, line the entire inside of the grill with cooking oil to make cleaning easier in the future. Make sure everything is cleaned out before and after each barbequed meal for best results.
Stainless Steel Maintenance
Frequently wipe down the surface of the stainless steel. While you clean your grill, you may be using tap water. To prevent the tap water from leaving mineral deposits on your grill, you can spray it down with a mixture with equal parts hot water and vinegar. Dry the grill with a soft cleaning rag and go in the direction of the metal to get the best look or shine. To polish your grill, you can use a small amount of baby oil. The oil will fix any scratches or marks on the grill as well as restore the original shine.
Disinfecting the Stainless Steel
It is good to disinfect your grill to ensure that you do not keep any bacteria that could transfer your food or attract pests. You can disinfect your stainless steel with a cleaning cloth and hydrogen peroxide. While disinfecting, use a soft sponge to clean off any spots or food on the steel, adding more hydrogen peroxide as you need it. Clean the stainless steel as often as you can by wiping it down and polishing it. This will help it from becoming dull or tarnished.
Cleaning Your Porcelain Grates
If your grates are removable, take them into your home and clean them in your kitchen sink. You may use dishwashing soap and a soft brush or sponge to remove any food or grime. You may need to use a gentle grease remover on any leftover grease.
Porcelain can be very fragile, and as it is a form of glass, you should wait until it is cool before cleaning it. If you try cleaning it when it is warm, the glass could start breaking down internally before it eventually cracks.
If your grates are not removable, clean them with a wet rag and with an organic cleanser outdoors. Make sure that you are gentle and wait until the grates are cool to the touch before cleaning.
You should clean both the grates and the grill often in order to keep them maintained. This will keep them in good shape throughout several barbeque seasons.
