Making a doll hat is a simple project which can make a big difference to the doll you put the hat on. A doll’s hat can be made in various styles and designs and using a variety of materials. You can also choose the most suitable colors, depending on the color of the dress or by taking account of the skin tone of the particular doll.

Step 1: Measure the Doll

First of all, it is best to measure the doll. You do not need to make a tight fitting hat. However, it is best to take into consideration the average size of the doll’s head so as not to make the hat too large or too small. It is also important to bear in mind the overall size of the doll since the hat has to be in proportion with the length of the doll so as not to appear miniscule or too bulky.

Step 2: Acquire the Fabric and Other Materials

Next, acquire the fabric you will be using to make the doll hat. It is often best to go for cotton for a simple hat or for silk for a more elaborate one. It will depend to some extent on the style of the doll. Match the fabric for the hat with the dress’s color. Otherwise, you could also sew up a matching dress as well. You may choose to sew the hat in a variety of styles, as it is a simple sewing project, considering the small size.

Step 3: Cut the Fabric

Cut the fabric according to the doll’s head measurements. Start off by cutting a squarish form and four smaller similar squares. These will, then, need to be sewn on each side of the larger square. You also need to cut two strips of fabric, which will then be sewn to the edges of the hat to serve as ties. For a more circular hat, cut out the main piece in a circular shape.

Step 4: Sewing the Pieces Together

Sew all the pieces of fabric together. This type of style is one where the sides of the hat will fold slightly at the bottom, so try to sew them at a slight angle to allow this fold to emerge. Finally, sew up the ties.

Step 5: Decorating the Hat

Your doll hat is now ready. You can opt to leave it like this or to decorate it to make it look more attractive. This can be done very simply, using a variety of methods. You can stitch some flowers around edges, or add just one or two flowers near the top or on one side. You can also use ribbons or some lace. Some may be easier to attach by gluing rather than sewing.

By following these steps, you will have sown a simple yet cute hat for your doll.
