by DoItYourself Staff

  • 1/4 inch thick plywood sheet
  • Pencil
  • Measuring tape
  • Saw
  • Sandpaper
  • Thick fabric of choice
  • Fabric crayon
  • Scissors
  • Staple gun with 1/8 inch thick staples
  • Cotton balls
  • Pins
  • Notes and pictures for the bulletin board

Making a homemade fabric bulletin board is a simple process that allows the creative juices to run free. A homemade fabric bulletin board can be personalized, as size, shapes and colors can be chosen to suit a personal style or tone of a room.

Step 1 – Preparing the Plywood

Place the plywood sheet down on a flat surface. Decide how large the fabric bulletin board will be using the measuring tape. When the size has been decided, use the measuring tape and the pencil to sketch the general outline of the fabric bulletin board on the plywood sheet. The shape of the fabric bulletin board is personal, so design it as desired. Options include square, rectangle, round or oval.

Cut out the chosen shape using the saw. When done, smooth the sizes of the plywood shape using the sandpaper to avoid any cracks and splinters in the plywood. The base for the fabric bulletin board has now been completed.

Step 2 – Prepare the Fabric

Prepare the fabric for the fabric bulletin board, using the same measurements as the plywood base. Place the fabric down on a flat surface and smooth out any folds or wrinkles. Place the plywood base piece on top of the fabric.

Create a 2-inch border around the plywood base piece using the measuring tape. Mark the border on the fabric using the fabric crayon. If the shape is circular or oval, create a 2 inch circular or oval border. When completed, cut the fabric out using scissors.

Step 3 – Attach the Fabric

Place the fabric down on the flat surface once more with the right-side facing downward. Place the plywood base for the fabric bulletin board on top of the fabric, lining it up so the 2 inch border is present on all sides of the wooden base.

Flip the fabric border up around the wooden base and attach one third of the fabric to the wooden base using the staple gun to create the fabric bulletin board. For example, if working with a square or rectangular wooden base, attach three sides of the four. If working with a circle or oval shape, attach about 75% of the circumference of the shape. There should be about 1/2 inch between the ends of each staple.

Step 4 – Fill the Fabric Bulletin Board with Cotton

Place the fabric bulletin board aside to prepare the cotton filling. Locate the cotton balls and tear them up. Once the cotton balls have been stretched and torn, stuff them into the fabric bulletin board through the part of the fabric bulletin board that has not been closed by the staple gun.

Stuff the fabric bulletin board with torn cotton balls until the fabric is firm and the fabric bulletin board has a nice and round shape. Pull the fabric tightly in the end where it has not been attached and pull it onto the backside. Attach the fabric on the backside using the staple gun, while the fabric is held tightly.

Step 5 – Finishing Touches

Attach pictures and bulletin notes to the fabric bulletin boards using pins. Slide the pins through the picture and into the fabric on the bulletin board and slide it back out through the fabric and through the picture to secure.

Lean the fabric bulletin board against a wall or hang it up on a wall.
