How to Make a Paper Light Shade

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Scissors
  • Spray Adhesive
  • Wire Frame or Lamp Shade
  • Flame Resistant Spray

While many people have designer and hand-made paper at their house, most don’t know that they can use it to make a custom paper light shade. There are two easy methods to make these shades.

Method 1: Use a Frame

Some craft shops and online stores sell wire frames for lamps. These frames come in many different shapes and sizes so choose carefully. The paper should be translucent enough to let some light through, but tough enough that it won’t rip when stretched around the metal frame. First, cut out a piece of paper big enough to wrap around the type of frame you have. Spraying the back side of the paper with a spray adhesive will ensure that the two pieces bond together. Spray adhesive works well because it won’t show through the paper when the light is on like heavier glue might. Make sure to overlap the paper a bit and glue the seam well. Fold and glue the excess over the top and bottom of the shade, being careful not to crease the paper. When finished, spray the entire shade with flame resistant spray to protect it from the heat of the light.

Method 2: Apply Your Paper to an Existing Light Shade

An easier method of doing this (especially if the paper is prone to tearing) is to simply use a spray adhesive to apply your paper directly to an existing light shade. The steps are the same; however, when using this method, one doesn’t even have to cover the entire shade. Instead custom patterns and designs can be cut and applied to the shade as desired.
