How to Make a Pegboard Tool Organizer

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Piece of pegboard
  • Pegboard mounting hardware
  • Pegboard organizing hardware
  • Power drill
  • Masonry drill bit (for basement) or ordinary drill bit
  • Screwdriver

A pegboard tool organizer is an excellent way to keep your tools–whether they're hand tools or craft tools–visible and easily findable.

Step 1 - Find Your Location

Decide where the pegboard should go. Make sure it's a place that is easy to reach!

Step 2 - Mount the Pegboard

  • Hold the pegboard where it will go, making sure it is level. Mark the wall through each corner hole.
  • Pre-drill for the screws using the marks you made. You may want to pre-drill each hole individually as you go, rather than all at once, in order to make sure they line up properly. Make sure the drill bit you use is the right size for the screws.
  • Pegboard mounting hardware consists of rubber or plastic spacers that go between the wall and the board, and screws. Line up the spacer, the board and the screw (it is helpful to have another person help with this). Tighten the screw.
  • Repeat for each corner of the pegboard.

Step 3 - Organize

Arrange the organizing items on the pegboard, making sure there is room for each tool to hang, and that the way you arrange them makes sense for the way you work. There is no right or wrong way! There are many configurations of organizing hardware, from general items like hooks to specialized holders for pliers, hammers, etc. These are available both in variety packs and individually. Choose the kinds of hardware that will best suit your needs. There are also small shelves, bins and jars that are made for pegboard.
