A glass mosaic is a piece of artwork made by attaching many broken pieces of stained glass on to a surface in any shape or pattern. You can apply pieces of stained glass to tabletops, picture frames, cups, plates, vases and wall hangings to create colorful and decorative objects to place indoors and outdoors alike.
Follow these simple steps to successfully make a stained glass mosaic that will stand out and make a bold statement in your home.
Step 1 – Select and Prepare Surface
Select the type of surface that you want to decorate with stained glass. It can be made from clay, wood or even glass itself. Roughen up a very smooth surface with sandpaper to encourage the grout to stick to it.
Before you begin, wipe your surface with a damp cloth to remove any dirt or dust and allow it to air dry completely.
Step 2 – Select a Design
Select a design you want to make with your stained glass. Go through books or search on the Internet for ideas on various designs and patterns. There are a large variety of templates available from which you can choose one that appeals to you. You can also create random designs by applying the pieces onto the selected surface without adhering to any particular form.
Arrange glass pieces to make shapes of animals, objects, or even alphabets. You can also place alternate lines of similar colored pieces. Use your imagination and taste to plan your design.
Those with a little experience can attempt a mosaic painting or portraits of themselves or a family member. Blow up your selected painting to get an idea of how many glass pieces you will need to use and their size, and follow the form accordingly.
Step 3 – Prepare Glass
Purchase your stained glass from any hobby or arts and crafts store when you select your base and image. Use the chips directly from the package or break them into the size required with tile nippers. Make sure you wear gloves and safety glasses when cutting glass to prevent possible injury.
Step 4 – Attach Glass to Surface
To create your artwork, lift a piece of glass, apply glass glue generously to its back and attach it on to the surface, pressing firmly. Leave a space of 1/8- inch between the glass pieces for the grout. Continue this procedure till all your glass pieces are fixed on the surface firmly in the required design. Allow the glue to set for 3 hours before you apply grout.
Step 5 – Apply Grout
Purchase either pre-mixed or powdered grout. Follow package instructions and mix to the consistency of ice cream. Make sure to wear your gloves and apply a thick layer over the entire surface, ensuring you fill all the gaps. Allow it to dry for ten minutes before wiping your artwork with a damp sponge to remove the grout off the glass pieces.
Allow your project 24 hours to dry completely before you handle it. Apply a coat of glass sealant if you want to place it outside.
