A window seat bench can be your ideal romantic place to watch the world go by. Customized with a comfortable cushion and covered with lovely fabric, you can spend time relaxing reading a book. You can use it as a hideaway to think or to simply gaze out of the window to admire the view outside.

Window cushion upholstery will also give a new, personalized look to your room if you're making it in your favorite colors or design to match your home decor. This little home project is very easy to do. Just follow this simple procedure:

Step 1 – Taking Measurements

If your window seat bench does not have foam on it already, start by taking the measurements of the frame on your bench. This will give you the size of foam you need. To determine the amount of fabric needed for the covering of the seat, you need to measure the length, width and depth of the foam. Add an extra four inches on all sides for hemming and sewing.

Step 2 – Choose the Material

Purchase the foam in the size and thickness desired. Also buy your fabric once you decide the colors or design you wish to decorate it with. It is recommended to choose upholstery fabric since it can withstand wear and tear. Always buy quality material for more satisfactory results and durability.

Step 3 – Cutting the Cover

On a flat surface, place your fabric facing down and put the foam on it. Mark the corners of the foam or trace around the padding onto the material. Use pencil on light fabrics and chalk on dark ones. Add an extra three to four inches on all sides and with the ruler make your border on this measurement. This is the size of your new cover. Slowly and precisely cut with the scissors on the line.

Note: By folding a big piece of fabric and cutting only three sides you will eliminate a seam.

Step 4 – Pinning the Sides

Turn the fabric inside out and match up the edges. Pin them but leave one side either the top or bottom unpinned. If the cover is in one piece, only pin on the short side and the one open long side. While if the fabric is in two pieces, pin the two longest sides and one short side.

Step 5 – Sewing the Cushion Cover

Sew along the pinned sides. Make sure to sew the fabric at least two inches from the outer edge. Remove the pins while sewing. Using a sewing machine makes the work go faster and more precisely.

Step 6 – Placing the Foam

Use the open side of the fabric to turn the cover right-side out. Put the cushion into the fabric through the same opening. Fold the open edges, pin them and finally sew this last side shut. Put the newly covered cushion in its place.

Making this little addition will make your personal escape wonderful and unique. There is nothing better than curling up in a window seat to separate ourselves from the stress of modern living, reminding us to rest and enjoy life.
