How to Make Dog Playground Equipment

by DoItYourself Staff

The old cliché saying is that a dog is a man's best friend, and for some people, this is true, so it is important to keep mans best friend in shape with dog playground equipment. Dogs are gentle animals that have interacted with human beings since the beginning of time. For this reason, many people have dogs as pets in their house, and some treat these dogs as family. Dogs need to lead a healthy life style, eat right, and exercise their bodies. It is recommended for serious dog owners to have their own dog playground equipment to keep their canine active and healthy.

Tools and Materials needed:

· Tires (large enough for your particular canine to fit through easily)

· Plastic pool

· Balls

· Empty Paint Buckets

· Cement

· Hoola Hoop

· Water

· Pick

· Shovel

Step 1: Preparing the play dog area

Remember that a playground, whether it is for a kid or a dog, takes up lots of space. Designate a large area, whether it be in the front or back yard, to a permanent placement of dog playground equipment. Clear the space of any debris, or objects that may be harmful to your canine.

Step 3: Making obstacles with buckets and cement

You can get buckets of any size or shape, and fill them with cement so your dog can have something to jump on. Cement is also good for keeping the dog's nails dull. You need to make a mixture of cement and water inside the bucket, and let it dry. Place the bucket where the obstacle course will be, since the dry cement can be heavy and therefore, difficult to move. Place the obstacles in any shape or configuration, but make sure its not too easy or too difficult to climb for the particular canine.

Step 4- Setting up tire obstacles to crawl through, or to jump over.

You can designate an area that has dirt in order for you  to bury half of the tire. Make sure to leave enough space for your canine to crawl under the tire. With a pick and a shovel, dig a hole around 10 inches deep, put the tire in the hole vertically,  then bury the bottom half of the tire with the shovel. Do not be frustrated if your puppy does not crawl under the tires, the dog can also jump the tires. Make sure to give the dog enough space between the tires, so the canine doesn't jump over one tire, just to run into another.

Step 5- Setting Up a pool

Many select breeds of dogs love water. Some breeds of dogs are avid swimmers, they also love to be refreshed on a hot day of summer. For this reason, adding a plastic pool is a good idea. The dog can enjoy the pool by running or bathing in the water. Make sure to keep a separate drinking source for your dog, but do not use any kind of cleaning chemicals for the pool water, since it is very likely that the dog will still drink from it.

Step 6- Make sure to use balls

Most dogs love to chase balls around, for this reason, you can add a variety of rubber balls for your canine friend to play with. Make sure not to use foam balls, because many dogs tend to eat them, resulting in having to get the dogs stomach pumped, since canines cannot digest foam. You can toss the balls around, or throw them in the pool for the dog to play with. Remember to keep water for your dog to drink since the dog will be doing lots of running around. Now that the dog playground equipment is finished, it is recommended to acquire some dog training books to fully enjoy the new playground with your canine.
