How to Make Homemade Craft Dough

by DoItYourself Staff

Making homemade craft dough is a fun and easy project that you can enjoy with your child. Made of some simple ingredients found in most kitchens, this dough is safe, suitable for all kinds of craft play and extremely inexpensive to make. Here’s how:

Homemade Craft Clay

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup hot water
  • ¼ cup salt
  • ¼ teaspoon cream of tartar
  • Food coloring

Combine all the dry ingredients in a small saucepan. Slowly add the water while stirring. Add food coloring until you get the shade desired and mix. Stir constantly and cook over a medium heat for 3 minutes or until the dough forms a clump. Remove dough from pan and place it on a dry, clean surface. Let cool until comfortable to touch and knead for a few minutes. Store in a sealable plastic bag or covered container in the refrigerator.

This craft dough is simple to make and your child can even help with the process. Let them stir and pour ingredients for a fun project you can do together and teach them some introductory cooking and measuring skills in the process.
