How to Make Homemade Silver Polish

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Water
  • Large bowl
  • Soft cloth
  • Long handled plastic spoon
  • Plastic funnel
  • Airtight plastic bottle
  • 1/2 cup of ammonia
  • 1/2 cup of turpentine
  • 2 cups of cold water
  • 1/4 of alum powder
  • 1 cup of talcum powder

Using homemade silver polish when cleaning silver accessories saves you money and time in going to a jewelry shop and having them professionally cleaned for you. By reading the guidelines below, you will be able to create your own homemade silver polish which does not include harmful chemicals that other silver polish has. This is beneficial to those who experience allergic reactions when exposed to those type of liquids which may even cause a more sensitive skin disorder.

Cleaning gemstones and accessories that have sensitive stones may need special solution. For cases like these, do not scrub a gemstone with a rough material. Rough substances as well as homemade polishes with toothpaste or baking soda can cut a gemstone. Be gentle when polishing gemstoned-jewelry.

Step 1 – Prepare Your Working Table and Ingredients

Before going into any process, make sure that you are wearing gloves and you are working on a flat surface. Avoid spillage as some ingredients may harm your things. Therefore, make sure that there is no clutter on your working surface.

Step 2 - Combine the Talcum Powder and Alum Powder

Pour two cups of water (cold) into a bowl. Put in ¼ cup alum powder and talcum powder. Stir the ingredients consistently until the combination is mixed evenly.

Step 3 – Add In the Ammonia and Turpentine

Pour half a cup of ammonia and turpentine into the combination. Then, stir it again evenly.

Step 4 – Pour the Solution into a Jar with Seal

Uncover a plastic bottle (large) and insert a funnel into its opening. Lift up the bowl cautiously and drain the combination from the container into the bottle through the funnel. Be sure to avoid spilling.

Step 5 – Seal the Jar and Store It Properly

Cover the bottle using an air-tight cap. When not in use, make sure to put it on a dry or a cool place.

Step 6 – Shake It Well Before Using

For the solution to blend well each time you use it, it is highly advisable that you shake it well first.

Toothpaste-Based Silver Polish

What most people do not know is that toothpaste can be used to clean and polish your silver items. So instead of running to the store to purchase silver polish products that may contain harmful substances, rush to your bathroom instead. And the beauty about using toothpaste as a silver polish is that it is ready to use.

It is very important to remember to always wash your item after cleaning to rinse the substances off the material. You can do it by using a clean cloth or rinsing it under running water. This part is very essential especially to those silvers with gaps and crevices to avoid substances from sticking to it.
