How to Make Sure a Graphics Card is Compatible

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Computer Manual
  • New graphics vCard
  • Note pad
  • Pencil

A graphics card is necessary to display the information on your computer screen. It is used in Internet gaming, computer games, watching music videos, watching streaming television or DVDs. It is an essential component to the user’s computer experience. When installing a new and updated graphics card, you must make sure it is compatible with your computer’s existing hardware and software. Even though your graphics card fits well into the computer’s slot, it may still fail if not properly reviewed for your computers software compatibility. Here’s what you should do in order to ensure proper function of your new graphics card.

Step 1 – Review Your Computer Manual

Start by digging out the computer manual. Take a look at the specifications necessary for your graphics card. Each computer has different expansion slots. Note which type of expansion slot you have (The expansion slot with either be a PCI-Express or Advanced Graphics Port).

Step 2 – Take Notes on Computer Specifications

Write a list on a piece of note paper detailing the computer’s information. Take special notes on the following: CPU speed, amount of memory (or RAM), hard drive size and capacity, power supply type, type of operating system. Note any changes you have made to your computer hardware and basic software packages since you made the purchase.

Step 3 – Go Shopping

Stop by your local computer store or electronics store. Browse the section on graphics cards. Pull all the graphics cards that meet your specifications noted in an earlier step. Your computer specifications may in fact be better than what is noted on the graphics card information. As long as your computer meets the minimum standards, the graphics card can be used and will be compatible with your overall system.

Step 4 – Compare Graphics Cards

Taking the products you have pulled off the shelf, line them up against one another. Now you need to compare the products for form and function. For example, if you are a heavy Internet gamer, you will need to purchase and install a graphics card that is recommended for this type of use. If you are someone who watches a great deal of streaming video and television on your computer, find a graphics card that is most suitable to this use. Graphics cards are not one-fits all. They all perform specific to the type of function they are designed for.

Step 5 – Check Hardware Compatibility

Last, check the compatibility of the hardware. Make sure you pick the graphics card that will fit inside your computer’s expansion slot. If you have both types of expansion slots, AGP is a better option as it operates at much faster speeds and will perform better in high graphic intense applications. AGP is also better suited for someone looking to spend time on the Internet gaming or watching streaming video.

Install yoiur graphics card and enjoy the updated video and other applications!
