With a little effort an empty wine barrel can be converted into a decorative lamp. Wine barrel lamps are a unique way to showcase your love for wine and the beauty of the barrel. Following a few steps, you can complete this project yourself.
The below materials can be found at a home improvement or lighting stores. Lamp repair kits are sold that contain the various parts.
Step 1: Applying a Finish to the Barrel
You can apply a nice finish to the barrel's wood, thereby sealing the grain and making it shine. You can also paint the barrel to the color of your choice. Apply paint or lacquer according the product manufacturer's instructions. You will probably need to lightly sand the barrel beforehand using a high-grit sandpaper. Make sure you allow the lacquer or paint to cure before proceeding to the next step.
Step 2: Drill Holes
Use the tape measure, find the center of the barrel top. This is where the neck of the lamp will go in. Using the drill and a drill bit, drill a hole in the top of the barrel. Make sure it is large enough for the lamp neck to drop in. You will also need to drill a hole at the base of the barrel for the power cord to exit. Keep the cord hole small by fishing up, from the base hole up, the end attaching to the socket. This will keep the plug end from passing through the hole.
Step 3: Install the Lamp
Before wiring the lamp, you may need to drop the lamp neck through the harp base. Some socket bases have the harp base attached. Now wire the power cord to the socket using the wire strippers and the screwdriver. Attach the lamp neck to the barrel using a lamp holder and a clamp. Tighten the nut for the lamp holder using the wrench. Set the neck through the clamp and use the drill for the two screws securing the clamp to the top of the barrel. This will hold the neck of the lamp to the barrel.
Step 4: Install the Bulb and Shade
Attach the lamp harp to the harp base by connecting the ends. Depending on the design, secure the connection with base caps or hand-tighten the nuts. With the harp installed, screw in a new light bulb. Now attach the lamp shade to the harp. Drop the shade bracket opening over the bolt in the top of the harp. Secure the two together with a finial.
Step 5: Turn on the Lamp
Now it's time to test your lamp. Plug it into a nearby socket and turn on the switch. The lamp should come on, illuminating your beautiful wood barrel. You can place your wine barrel lamp on an end table for utility and aesthetic enjoyment.
