How to Make Your Own Magnetic Storm Windows

by DoItYourself Staff

Magnetic storm windows are a cost-effective alternative to complete window replacement to make them more efficient. These storm windows simply mount to the inside of existing windows and are held in place with a magnet.

The seal created prevents hot or cold air from seeping in from outdoors. The combination of the tight seal, the Plexiglas window pane and the original windows can provide improved energy efficiency. They can easily be changed in or out seasonally and all components are adapted for sun exposure.

Supplies Needed for Storm Windows

The tools you will need to make your magnetic storm windows include glass cleaner, paper towels, 1/8 inch-thick acrylic sheets and a storm window kit. These kits can be purchased at home improvement stores and can make seven average-sized windows measuring 3 feet by 4 feet.

Included in the kit is 100 feet of steel strip, two 50-foot rolls of magnets (similar to those found on refrigerator doors), 200 feet of trim tape (comes in white or dark brown) and two 100-foot rolls of adhesive.

Assembly Directions

The assembly of magnetic storm windows is a simple process if you follow the below steps. It should take about 30 minutes to assemble.

Step 1 – Measure Your Windows

Measure the window, not including the frame. You should measure across the top, across the bottom, the left side, right side and from opposite corner to opposite corner. Write down the measurements to take with you to get the Plexiglas.

Step 2 – Measure the Plexiglas

It is important to measure the Plexiglas correctly to ensure a good seal and fit to the inside of the window. The Plexiglas should be cut 1 1/8 inch greater than the distance between the opposite inner edges of the 5/8 inch steel mounting strips.

If your weather stripping is going to replace the lower cleat, you will need to have measured your window down to the sill and add a half inch.

Step 3 – Mount Magnetic Strips to Plexiglas

Using the pressure-sensitive adhesive, mount the rubber magnetic strips around the Plexiglas along the edges. The adhesives are acrylic-based which gives them their strength and durability.

Step 4 – Mount the Trim Tape

Mount the trim tape on the other side of the Plexiglas to hide the magnets.

Step 5 – Mount the Steel Mounting Strips

Using the trim tape and adhesive, mount four steel mounting strips around the window perimeter.

Step 6 – Install the Magnetic Storm Window

Hold the Plexiglas window with the magnets facing the steel. The magnets will pull the window into place.

Storm Window Removal

Magnetic storm windows are easy to uninstall. Simply pull up on the corners and pull the window towards you.

Plexiglas Cleaning Tips

Plexiglas is not glass and cannot be cleaned in the same manner. Use soapy water created by dishwashing liquid and water to clean, wiping gently. Rinse with a wet cloth and then dry using a lint-free cloth.
