How to Make Your Own Textured Paint

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • White Latex Paint
  • Colored Paint
  • Texturing medium
  • Cup
  • Sieve
  • Piece of Wood or stick for stirring

Textured paint adds dimensionality, vitality and added style to any painted surface and although textured paint can be found in stores, they are very expensive and tend to be unsuitable for some types of application. Hence, being able to do your own textured paint will come in handy because it is not only easy but also very cost effective and can be applied to almost any material.

Step 1 – Deciding On the Base

When it comes to texturing paint it is always advisable to use white latex paint as a base for your texturing and then applying a coat of colored paint on top of it. If you are going to go for latex paint do not worry about any gloss or finish because you will be covering it with colored paint that will have your desired finish.

Step 2 – Selecting the Paint

After having decided on whether to use latex paint or directly texturing the colored paint, you need to select the paint color your want to use. If you choose to directly texture the colored paint, it is important that when you go to buy the colored paint to select one shade darker on the paint store color chart because the paint color will probably lighten a bit with the addition of the texturing medium. Therefore before painting the whole wall try some sample tests to see if the end result is to the desired intensity.

Step 3 – Selecting the Texturing Medium

At this point, you need to consider what type of texturing medium you will be mixing to your paint. There are a variety of products such as pre-mixed drywall mud, spackling compound, dry sheetrock compound or sand.

Step 4 – Adding Texturing

Once you have both the paint and texturing medium at hand you can now start the mixing process. Start adding the texturing medium one cup at a time. Remember to sift through the powder with a sieve or compound before adding it to the paint to avoid any lumps in the paint. While adding the texturing medium to the paint it is important to continuously stir the mixture either with a stick or a piece of wood.

Step 5 – Reaching the Right Consistency Level

When you are pouring texturing medium to the paint it is always important to mix only cupfuls of medium to the paint so that if necessary you can get the same consistency level later on. It is good to note that dry powder mixes a lot better than drywall joint compound so if you are a beginner consider using dry powder. With dry powder, adding a cup at a time, helps to create the best consistency levels while when using drywall joint compound (pre-mixed drywall mud) you should instead use half cup portions to avoid problems. You can keep on adding textured medium until you reach the desired level of texturing. When you are happy with the consistency you can start painting.

This is the easiest method of texturing your own textured paint. The only things you need to remember are that the texturing medium should be added in cupfuls and to stir the mixture continuously while adding the medium to the paint.
