How to Mix Henna
Henna is a natural dye applied to the hair and skin that has been popularly used in the Middle East, Africa and India for thousands of years. The recent years have seen a surge in its popularity, both as a natural hair dye and a temporary hand and body decoration, in the West. Here is how to mix henna:
Mix 24 Hours Before Use
Henna should be mixed 24 hours before use. Mix 1/2 cup of henna powder with 1/4 cup lemon juice in a bowl, mixing until there are no lumps left and the mixture is the consistency of a smooth paste. Cover the paste with plastic wrap making sure there are no air pockets in the mixture. Leave the paste in a warm place for 12 hours.
Add Sugar to the Paste
After 12 hours, remove the plastic wrap and add 1 tsp. sugar. Sugar makes the paste moist and easy to apply to skin and hair. Finally add oil to the mixture, tea tree or eucalyptus oils are good choices. Stir the mixture well and cover with plastic wrap and leave aside for another 12 hours.
Add Lemon Juice if Required
Finally the dye is ready to be applied. The henna should be smooth and not runny. If the paste is too thick, gradually blend in lemon juice, a few drops at a time till the desired consistency is reached.
