How to Move a Fish Tank

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Heavy duty bags or cups with lid used for rebagging fish
  • Net
  • Styrofoam cooler
  • Water conditioner
  • Box with padding

If you're like most fish owners, you set up your fish tank a bit at a time, adding a fish or 2 every so often. Moving an entire tank requires rebagging all those fish, moving your tank, gravel, air pump and reestablizing your tank before adding your fish.

Step 1 - Rebag Your Fish

Using a net, place each fish in its own heavy-duty bag with water from the existing tank. Place each of the bags in your styrofoam cooler to keep the water temperature as even as possible. Place a thermometer in the cooler to ensure it stays within a safe temperature range as you move.

Step 2 - Prepare the Tank for Moving

Once the fish are removed, break down the rest of the tank (gravel, pump, plants, etc.), and rinse and dry them. Pack the items appropriately for moving, padding fragile accessories, putting freshly cleaned gravel in a bag or container, and so forth.

Step 3 - Reestablish Your Tank

Once you reach your new location, set up your fish tank. Add water, and condition it as described on chemical conditioning container before adding fish—about 24-hours later. Acclimate your fish to the water temperature and water slowly, allowing them time to get use to the new water, just as you do when cleaning your tank.
