How to Open Radiator Valves

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Pipe wrench
  • Pair of protective goggles
  • Towels
  • Hose clamp

Opening up radiator valves can be a fairly simple task. However, it can also be a dangerous one if you're not armed with the proper equipment and a thorough instructional guide. Read on to learn everything you'll need to know about safely removing radiator valves.

Step 1 - Take the Necessary Precautions

Before opening your radiator valves, you must first shut off your radiator's water source and your boiler's heat. Also, be sure to give the water in your radiator enough time to cool off. This will help prevent you from acquiring severe burns from steam and/or hot water. Under no circumstances should a radiator that is not fully cooled be opened.

Step 2 - Lay Your Towels

Before you open your radiator valves, it is a good idea to spread towels around your work area to prevent any significant water damage to your floors, should leakage occur.

Step 3 - Open Your Valves

Now that you've laid out your towels and given your radiator ample time to cool down, put on your safety goggles and use your pipe wrench to carefully open up the valve of your choosing.
