How To Operate a Sprinkler System

by DoItYourself Staff

Operating a sprinkler system can be done mainly with two different methods, or a combination of the two. Before operating any sprinklers it is a good idea to find out any current restrictions or moratoriums on watering.

Automatic Zone and Timer
Many areas have restrictions regarding the amount of time sprinkler systems can operate and at what times they can operate. Setting up your sprinkler system in several zones will help you maximize your coverage and allow for better water usage. However, keeping track of all the different zones, durations, and times can be somewhat confusing.

An automatic system, with a timer, can be set ahead of time and allowed to run automatically eliminating any need for remembering to run the water, or shut it off. An automatic system works great with a large lawn, or a busy lifestyle where you are not home during the times when watering is allowed.

Manual Usage
If your lawn is not large enough for a zone, or you do not have an automatic, or even in ground sprinkler system, you will have to manually turn on the water, keeping track of the time it is on, and then turn it off after the allotted time.
