How to Paint a Circuit Breaker

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Sandpaper
  • Primer
  • Paintbrush
  • Paint

You can paint a circuit breaker box so that the metal blends in with the wall. This can look much better than having the box standing out with a standard gray metal color.

Step 1 - Preparation

You need to start by sanding the metal of the circuit breaker box in order to prepare it for the paint. This will help the primer adhere properly to the metal. You only need to sand lightly, enough to roughen the surface.

Step 2 - Primer

Use a steel primer on the metal. This will eliminate the possibility of corrosion in the metal and give a good base for the paint. You only need to apply a thin coat and then give it time to dry.

Step 3 - Paint

Use an acrylic latex paint that blends in the wall around the circuit breaker box. This paint will last longer than other types and can be wiped clean easily. To apply, paint two thin coats rather than a single thick coat of paint on the circuit breaker box. Allow the paint to dry fully between coats. You shouldn’t need to use more than two coats of acrylic latex paint to give a good solid cover to the circuit breaker box.
