How to Paint a Wood Kitchen Chair

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Sandpaper
  • Paint brush
  • Mini paint roller
  • Clean cloth
  • Water (for latex based paint)
  • Paint thinner (for oil based paint)

If you have a wood kitchen chair that has sustained some abuse, which you would like a different paint color, use the information below to paint your chair.

Step 1 – Choose the Right Color and the Right Paint

Begin by choosing paint in the color of your choice, but also choose a paint that will cover well. Latex based paint, for example, covers well, dries quickly, and is easy to clean. If you want a more durable finish, then choose an oil-based paint.

Step 2 – Sand Your Chair

Sand you kitchen chair thoroughly before applying paint. Once it is sanded, make sure you wipe off all dust residue before applying paint or primer.

Step 3 – Apply Primer

Apply a primer or 2 coats of paint. Use a brush size of about one to one and a half inches to paint the chair back and legs. For flatter surfaces, use a mini- roller.

Step 4 – Allow the First Paint Coat to Dry

If you are using two paint coats, rather than a primer and one coat, paint one coat and allow it to dry. Then, apply the second coat.
