How to Paint an Aluminum Fence
what you'll need
- Paint
- Thinner
- Primer
- Wire brush
- Paint roller
You may choose to paint your aluminum fence to enhance its aesthetic beauty or to prevent it from damage due to weather. Aluminum has a tendency to be oxidized by air, but occasional painting can prevent this and increases its durability.
Step 1 - Prepare the Paint Surface
The paint needs to be applied on a clean and dry surface, so your first job will be to clean out any rust or loose paint from the aluminum surface. You can do it using a wire brush. Now, rinse the aluminum fence lightly with water and allow it to dry completely for few hours.
Step 2 - Apply Primer
Make a thinned primer by mixing 1 litter of thinner with 2 gallons of oil based primer. Apply it on the dried fence surface with a paint roller. Allow the primer to dry for about 30 hours. If the major part of your fence is already covered with previously applied paint, then you don not need to apply primer. Application of any rust inhibiting spray will be sufficient.
Step 3 - Apply the Finish Coat
Apply 100 percent paint as a finish coat over the layer of dried primer. Allow the paint to dry for 12 hours.
