Chipboard is a cost-effective material that can be used to produce different goods, like furniture, decorative chipboard boxes, or cabinetry. Though cost-effective, this board is difficult to paint. Follow the rules provided below to paint chipboard correctly.

Step 1 – Prepare the Surface

First, prepare the painting area by laying down large sheets of newspaper or a large cloth. Then, inspect your chipboard to make sure it’s clean. If there is any grease or moisture on the board, the paint won’t stick to it. To prevent getting anything on the chipboard, consider wearing rubber gloves when you handle the board.

Step 2 – Sand the Board

Next, use a piece of medium-grit sandpaper to gently sand the entire chipboard. Sanding the board before you paint it will allow the paint to stick to the board more easily and remove any surface imperfections. Sand the board until it feels smooth. Then, use a dry cloth to wipe down the surface to remove any leftover board debris.

Step 3 – Apply Primer

Warning: When using primer or paint, wear protective gloves to avoid skin contact with the substance, and use only in a well-ventilated area.

Primer not only works as a protective barrier, but also it helps to seal chipboard’s porous surface to create a smooth painting surface. Using a roller, apply the primer thinly and evenly. Allow it to dry before adding another coat. Applying multiple thin coats will help the primer layers seal into each other, creating a stronger barrier.

Step 4 – Apply Paint

Use a roller to apply the first layer of acrylic paint. Do not use paints with a heavy water or oil base, as these types of paint will soak right into the chipboard’s porous surface and make the board look uneven and clumpy.

Apply the acrylic paint evenly with the roller. Allow the coat to completely dry, and then add another 2-3 layers of paint until you achieve sufficient coverage. Add more coats depending on the depth of color you want.

Step 5 – Add Clear Sealant

Finally, seal your paint with a coat of clear sealant. Clear sealant will protect your paint job and give it a professional, glossy look. Apply the clear coat with another clean roller, and allow it to dry. Add a second coat, and allow that to dry, too, before you move the chipboard to another location or use it for another project.

Paint Chipboard FAQ

Is it possible to paint chipboard?

Chipoard, also known as particle board or low-density fiberboard, can be painted and stained in any shade you want. The key is to properly prime and prep chipboard prior to painting.

What kind of paint can I use on chipboard?

When you're painting chipboard, you want to choose a paint that has good adhesion. Acrylic paints, oil-based paints, and lacquers all cover chipboard well.

Can you paint chipboard with acrylic?

Acrylic paint covers chipboard quite effectively and it is one of the best paints to use on this material. Acrylic sticks to the chipboard well and it's available in a huge variety of colors.

Can you paint over coated chipboard?

Coated chipboard is often covered with melamine or foil, materials that are designed to prevent stains and provide moisture resistance.

You cannot paint over this coating, even with primer. You will need to sand it down first to give it a more matte finish that the paint can stick to before you paint it.

Can I sand chipboard?

Usually, sanding chipboard is actually recommended for the best possible results. Chipboard is often pre-sanded before you buy it and you will probably want to further sand it to give it a smoother finish.
