How to Paint Tin Ceiling Panels
what you'll need
- Roller with texture ceiling nap
- Roller handle and extension
- Paint tray
- Primer
- Ceiling paint
- Drop cloths
Tin ceiling panels can be painted to highlight or contrast the rest of the room. It is like painting a normal ceiling with only a few changes.
Step 1 - Prepare the Area
Remove as much furniture as possible from the room to avoid splattering it with paint. If you can't remove some pieces cover them with drop cloths. Also cover your floors with drop cloths. Remove curtains and draperies. Painting a ceiling can be messy.
Step 2 - Prime the Ceiling
Tin ceilings should be primed before you paint them so the paint will have a surface to adhere to. Metal or tin will peel without this step even though you give the area good coverage. For metal, an oil-based primer is recommended. Pour a bit of primer into the paint tray and roll the roller through it. Start at one end of the room and work your way across. Allow dry time as suggested by the manufacturer of the product you are using.
Step 3 - Paint the Ceiling
Following the same directions as above, but using paint, paint the tin ceiling. It is important to use a thick roller cover that is designed for a textured area so all of the embossed areas of the tin panels are covered.
