How to Plug a Nail Hole in a Tire

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Car tool kit, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.
  • Jack
  • Patch
  • Patch plug glue
  • Roller (these should be part of a kit)

Getting a nail through your car tire can be very annoying, and the resultant nail hole can be difficult to patch if you have never done it before. It is sometimes best to practice patching your tire, as there is nothing worse than being stuck at the side of the road with a nail hole in your tire and no spare. However, once you know how to do it, patching over a nail hole in a tire couldn't be easier.

Step 1 - Remove the Tire

Take the tire off of the car axle, and make a note of where the nail hole is. Take the tire off of the rim, and then shake the wheel to see if the nail is still inside. You should try and extract it if it is.

Step 2 - Fix the Patch

Using the roller, scuff around the edge of the hole so that the edge is smooth enough, then use some of the glue, and apply a very thin layer. Allow 5 minutes for the glue to semi-dry, and then quickly apply the patch with the plug. Allow to dry.
