How to Polish a Sea Shell

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Sea shell(s)
  • Bleach
  • Clean water
  • Bucket
  • Soft brush
  • Mild detergent
  • Soft cloth
  • Mineral oil

A sea shell is extremely delicate and how to polish it is often a two-step process that involves both grinding and polishing. Due to the delicate nature of sea shells, grinding is not recommended. If youare a collector, this process may reduce the value of the shell. The following are some tips on how to polish a sea shell.

Step 1 - Wash

Wash your sea shell thoroughly, ensuring you reach all the curves so that there is no dirt or odor left.

Step 2 - Soak

Make a solution of 1/2 bleach and 1/2 water in a bucket and soak your sea shell in it overnight.

Remove and rinse the shell thoroughly the next morning.

Step 3 - Re-clean

Using a soft brush and a mild detergent, clean it well again, reaching all the curves and turns in the shell. When clean, dry it thoroughly.

Step 4 - Oil and Buff

With a soft cloth, put some mineral oil on it and rub it all over your sea shell. Let the oil stay on the shell for a few hours. Now wipe the extra oil off the sea shell and buff it gently until the shell shines.
