How to Polish Cabinet Hardware

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Metal polish
  • Clean cloth
  • Paper towels
  • Expendable toothbrush
  • Warm water

If any of the cabinet handles in your home have started to lose their shine, you may be wondering how to polish cabinet hardware. Fortunately, you can make your cabinet handles sparkle like new in just a few easy steps.

Step 1 - Gently Wipe Down Your Handles

Before you can begin polishing your handles, it's generally a good idea to remove any dust or light dirt from them. To do this, use a lightly dampened washcloth or paper towel to gently wipe the handle in a vertical fashion, paying special attention to any caked-on filth. Once your cabinet hardware is nice and clean, you may move on.

Step 2 - Polish Your Handles

Before proceeding with this step, make sure the brand of polish you purchased is suitable for the type of metal out of which your cabinet handles are made. Additionally, some people prefer to remove their cabinet handles before polishing them, though this is not essential. If you choose to keep your handles attached to your cabinets, take care to promptly clean any wayward polish.

Begin by applying your polish to a clean, lightly dampened cloth. Next, in much the same manner as your preliminary cleaning, carefully rub the polish onto your cabinet hardware in a vertical fashion. Once the polish has been applied, use an expendable toothbrush to buff the handles until they shine. Lastly, once the polish has fully dried, give the handles one more wiping with a clean, dampened cloth.
