How to Practice Internet Safety with Kids

by DoItYourself Staff

When kids are aware of the importance of internet safety, it makes them much safer from the possible dangers that lurk in cyber world. The internet is a wonderful tool for sharing information and knowledge. It has grown explosively in recent years, and because of its size and accessibility, it can be a deadly tool in the hands of predators. There are several things parents can do to enhance their children’s online experiences, while keeping them safe.

The Importance of Parental Knowledge and Awareness

The internet is growing rapidly, and kids are learning new lingo and terms daily. It is vital for parents to keep abreast of new technologies, so that they can be aware of their kids’ online activities. Children today can access the internet from many places other than home. Parents and caretakers must be knowledgeable about the internet, so that they can be a step ahead of their kids. You cannot protect your child online if the internet is an unknown element to you. Monitor your kids’ online activities, go to the websites they visit and check their online communications and chats.

Keeping the Internet Safe for Kids

Make sure your computer is well equipped to filter out offensive material and inappropriate websites. There are several kinds of software available, which can block out harmful and inappropriate content from your internet browser. Install such safety software on your computer.

Keep the computer in a high traffic area of the home, such as the living room or family room. Never let kids surf on the internet in their rooms by themselves. They could be lured or tricked into giving out personal details by online “friends” who are actually predators in disguise.

Make sure your kids are well aware of the dangers that lurk on the internet. They must be fully aware of the fact that a predator can pose as another person to gain their friendship. They can use fake names, pictures and other details to steal an identity.

Internet Safety Rules for Kids

It is therefore very important to avoid chatting with strangers in chat rooms. Never send your pictures to people you do not know. Never enter personal information such as your name, phone number or address on websites, and never provide it to someone you do not know personally. Avoid entering personal information in chat rooms, as it may be intercepted by a predator. Never use your real name when using a chat room, or when posting opinions on web sites.

Never offer to meet someone you met online, or accept free gifts from strangers. Inform your parents immediately if you receive any offensive content. Never accept or download files sent to you by a stranger. If you receive files from a friend, make sure it is safe and free of viruses, before downloading. They could contain viruses and Trojans that infect your computer and steal information. Never open messages or emails sent to you by strangers. If you have pictures of yourself online, keep them strictly private. For added safety, avoid uploading pictures of yourself in locations that can be recognized, such as your school or next to your street name.
