How to Prepare for a Deck Treatment
what you'll need
- Broom
- Painters tool
- Pressure washer
- Pre-treatment chemicals
- Water
- 5-Gallon bucket
- Pump garden sprayer
In order to prepare for a deck treatment, your deck needs to be swept, cleaned and pre-treated. This is a quick and easy job that can be completed following these simple steps.
Step 1 – Clear the Deck
Before you get started, makes sure your deck is completely free of debris. Use your broom to sweep off any papers, leaves or twigs. Use a dull knife or a painter’s tool to dislodge any objects stuck between the wood panels.
Step 2 – Moisten the Deck
Dampen the wood to prepare the deck for the pre-treatment chemicals. You can use a hose, but a high-pressure washer is more efficient. These can often be rented from hardware stores or major grocery stores.
Step 3 – Prepare the Chemicals
In a large bucket, mix the pre-treatment chemicals (available at any hardware store) with warm water. Wait up to 30 minutes for the mix to dissolve.
Step 4 – Apply the Pre-Treatment
Pour the pre-treatment into your garden sprayer. Apply liberally and evenly to the deck. Wait at least 10 minutes for the chemicals to take effect.
Step 5 – Wash the Deck
With your high-pressure washer, rinse your deck until free of suds. Use a steady, sweeping motion to evenly disperse the water.
