How To Prevent Water From Entering Your Crawlspace

If you have a crawlspace in your home, there's a great possibility that crawlspace water will be growing mold and mildew beneath your floors. This water is in the form of moisture, or small streams of runoff water during the spring thaw or heavy rain. There are ways you can keep water from entering into your crawlspace if you follow a few steps.

Install Water Vapor

The biggest problem of crawlspaces is the moisture that comes from the ground as part of the natural water cycle. You can stop this by placing a water barrier on the ground to keep the moisture from rising. Stretch the barrier across the entire crawlspace and bring it up the side of the walls a few inches.

Install Exterior Drainage

Dig out the area around your crawlspace and install a PVC drainage pipe around the outside. Dig until you have enough room to put the PVC pipe and a layer of gravel. Drill some holes in the pipe and bury it. Now, when there is runoff it will go into the drain pipe instead of your crawlspace.

Install a Power Fan

If you can keep the air moving, and destabilize the atmosphere in the crawlspace, then you can stop water from forming on the pipes, electrical wiring, and ductwork. Install one at each end of your crawlspace for the best effect.
