How to Protect Floor Coverings

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Old sheets
  • Stain remover
  • Rubber mats
  • Area rugs
  • Felt pads

Floor coverings require special attention to maintain their beauty. Be sure to protect them from possible damage. Whenever you are doing any home improvement work, be sure to lay old sheets over the floors to protect them from any paint or drywall mudding spills. The special attention required for your floors will vary depending on the covering you have.

Step 1 – Protecting Carpet Floors

When installing carpet flooring, be sure to consider using a stain resistant product. This type of carpeting is easier to clean and maintain. Use a carpet stain removal product to remove any spills or marks on the carpet. Be sure to do this as quickly as possible to prevent the stain from setting into the carpet fibers.

Step 2 – Protecting Vinyl Floors

Lay rubber mats over the floor space in entrance ways where you have vinyl flooring. Attach felt pads to the bottoms of the legs of furniture to prevent any scratching on the vinyl when the furniture is moved.

Step 3 – Protecting Wood

Whenever possible, install a hardwood flooring option rather than a softwood one. Lay area rugs in high traffic areas. Place felt pads under furniture to prevent scratching.
