How to Puree Peas with a Blender

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Peas (frozen or dried will work)
  • Blender (immersion or stand blender)
  • Pan
  • Water

Pureeing peas with a blender is a simple task that can be accomplished in a matter of minutes. Whether using sweet peas for baby food or cooking dried peas for soup, it is easy and quick to achieve a nice creamy consistency to your peas using a standard blender or an immersion blender. Here’s how.

Step 1 – Prepare the Peas

Depending on what you are making with the pureed peas will determine what peas to use and how to cook them. If you are making baby food, the best option is a bag of frozen sweet peas. If you are making a soup, you will want to select dried peas, generally found in the section of the grocery store with other beans and legumes. For frozen peas, place them directly in a pan or in a steamer basket and add a small amount of water to the pan. Bring to boil, reduce heat and cover. Cook the peas until hot. This should only take a couple of minutes. If working with dried peas, add the peas to a pan, cover with water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer until the peas are tender and begin to fall apart. Add any spices or herbs that you want at this time.

Step 2 – Puree the Peas

Once the peas are cooked, you can use your blender to puree the peas. If you have a stand blender, you will need to transfer the peas to the blender container. Carefully pour the peas in and place the lid on. In the case of sweet peas, add some of the cooking water to make a thinner consistency. Use the puree button on your blender and leave it on until the peas are the consistency you desire.

If you have an immersion blender, attach the blending attachment and simply insert it into the pan (remove the steamer basket if you used one) and turn it on. Continue to blend until it is the consistency you want.

In both instances, the peas will be very hot, so be careful when transferring the peas not to splash the liquid on you. If using an immersion blender be sure that it is inserted into the peas so as not to splatter when you turn the blender on.

Step 3 – Cleaning Up

Return your now pureed peas to the cooking pan and disassemble the blender and wash it. For an immersion blender, wipe down the wand with soapy water and remove the attachment and wash in soapy water. For the stand blender, remove the container and unscrew the bottom. Wash all pieces separately in soapy water and dry completely before storing them.

Pureeing peas is an easy job with a blender. Follow these easy instructions and have pureed peas ready to go and your blender all cleaned up in a matter of just a short while.
