How to Put a Martingale Collar on Your Dog

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • One Martingale Dog Collar
  • One Dog

A Martingale collar is a safe way of collaring your dog without the use of a choke chain. While the Martingale collar is also not used to choke the dog, it does have excellent discipline effects and is becoming vastly more popular. The collar should be fitted to the exact measurements of the neck of that particular dog. The Martingale collar is usually constructed of a thick band or belt style, with a loop on either end. The loops are attached by a chain which is then attached to the lead.

Step 1 – Settling the Dog

If your dog is already trained to sit to the ‘heal’ order you can have the dog come to you and sit as requested. Make sure your dog remains still. Some dogs get excited when they hear the rattling of a lead and collar and it can be signal to them that it’s ‘walkies’ time.

Step 2 – Placing the Collar

Open the collar to its widest setting and slip it over the dog's head. Slide the collar around so that the chain part is facing the front, under its chin. When the collar is to be fitted to a lead or leash you can then slide the collar to the back of the dog's neck. This allows you to keep mastery over the dog as you walk it.
