How to Recharge a Lithium Battery

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Charger
  • Refrigerator

There is more to charging a lithium battery than plugging it into the nearest outlet. In fact, you cannot charge a lithium battery, unless it is a lithium ion battery. Generally, a lithium ion battery has a long life, but there are ways you can make it last longer.

Step 1: Charger

Each lithium battery is different, depending on its style. Be sure you have a charger that is compatible. You cannot charge a lithium battery with a battery charger meant for alkaline batteries. This charger needs to have some way of measuring the total charge in the battery. This will help you know when you need to charge your battery and, in the case of storage, how much more charge your battery needs. It will also help you know when it is time to buy a new battery.

Step 2: Timing

In order to get the most out of your lithium battery, you need to charge it at the right time. This battery does not do well if you allow it to discharge completely. It is best to recharge your battery often. For example, if you have a lithium battery in your cell phone, it is better to charge it while it still has half of its power than when the phone stops working. There is an exception to this rule. Every twenty to thirty times you recharge your phone, you need to let the battery completely discharge.

Step 3: Storage

If you don’t plan to use the battery for a while, you need to store it properly. Charge the battery up to forty percent of its capacity and keep it in a cool place. A refrigerator works well. The cooler the area, the more charge capacity the battery will hold when you are ready to use it again.

Step 4: Process

Each battery needs a different charger. They all need to be plugged into a constant power source, but the charger will be specific to the battery type. For precise details on how to charge your particular battery, follow the instructions in the owners manual. Keep an eye on the charger while it is working and be mindful of how charged the battery is. Do not let the battery overheat. Excessive heat wears the battery down more quickly. If it becomes hot, stop charging it, or charge at a slower rate.

Step 5: Electric Devices

When the battery remains in a device while there is an electric current running through it, the battery becomes overheated, shortening its life span. If it is possible, remove the lithium battery. This will help your battery live a longer life. Your battery will hold its charge longer and you won’t need to recharge it as often. Just be sure to store your battery correctly. If you cannot remove the battery, do not let the device overheat. This is not only bad for the battery, but it may also damage any electric circuits inside the device.
