How to Reduce Damage when Drilling through Mosaic Tile

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Masking tape
  • Drill
  • Tile drill bit
  • Spray bottle
  • Water

Mosaic tile is beautiful tile work that can be found in the home. Mosaic tile can be very small squares or larger ones. The tiles are arranged in intricate patterns but a time may come when you need to drill a hole through the mosaic tile. You want to reduce the damage done to the mosaic tile and the information below will show you how.

Step 1 - Mark the Spot

Determine where on the mosaic tile you want to place the hole. Place 2 pieces of masking tape where you want to drill the hole. Have the tape form an "X" where the center of the "X" is where the hole will be placed.

Step 2 - Prepare the Drill

Install the tile drill bit in the drill and spray it down with cold water. Place the drill over the tape where you want the hole to be placed. Make the drill as level as possible.

Step 3 - Drill the Hole

Mosaic tile is very touchy so when you drill the hole make sure that the drill bit is level. Use even pressure as you drill while spraying the bit down with water to keep it cool.
